HHS Announces $267 Million in Grants

On April 6, HHS announced its release of $267 million in grants for Regional Extension Centers (RECs) to 28 additional nonprofit centers. The $267 million comes from the HITECH Act which was adopted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

More HIE grants awarded

On Monday March 22, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced $160 million of the final set of grants to help states adopt health information technology. The grants are part of the State Health Information Exchange Cooperative Agreement Program mandated in the 2009 Stimulus bill.

Health IT: What it Really Means

ARRA was signed into law on February 17, 2009.  On August 20, 2009, the HIT Standards Committee made recommendations to National Coordinator Blumenthal for standards governing meaningful use of electronic health records.  HHS will issue a final rule based on the recommendations by December 31, 2009.  There will be a 60 day comment period.
