Health IT Now Calls on HHS to Review Role of ONC

Yesterday, Health IT Now sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, M.D., calling for a review of the role of the Office of the National Coordinator.

The letter, sent by HITN Executive Director Robert Horne, reads, “We respectfully request that Congress and the administration work with stakeholders to clarify what role and to what extent ONC should play in the overall regulation of health information technology, and how such a role would interact with other regulatory agencies. …

“We believe recent actions by ONC may have overstepped original authorities provided under the HITECH Act. Specifically, HITN is concerned with the potential impact of the ONC Enhanced Oversight and Accountability final rule. …

“Through this review, we urge the administration to better align the Certification Program with the needs of providers and patients under future CMS programs, such as the Quality Payment Program. …

“HITN believes the start of a new administration creates opportunities to review and improve the functions of the federal government and that such efforts to clarify the role of ONC in the marketplace are patient-focused and bipartisan.”
