Health IT Now Comments on CMS Primary Care Reform Initiative

Washington, DC – Today, Health IT Now (HITN) issued the following comment on the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service’s (CMS) Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) model:

“HITN commends CMS on their commitment to testing new care delivery and payment models that allow better flexibility and care coordination for providers and patients. However, HITN believes that in order for CMS to maximize on the potential of this model, it must also allow providers the flexibility to utilize technology to deliver care.

We encourage CMS to support delivery options under CPC+ that allow for technology to substitute for in-person care. While other government agencies like the VA continue to identify and increase utilization of technology in delivering care (telehealth), Medicare continues to lag in its adoption of technology as a means of delivering care.

HITN believes providers and patients should have the flexibility to leverage technology to achieve the established goal of CPC+ – ‘to improve the quality of care patients receive, improve patients’ health, and spend health care dollars more wisely.’ Technology, if thoughtfully leveraged, can provide comprehensive monitoring of chronic conditions and more timely access to care, thus avoiding adverse health outcomes. We therefore call on CMS to identify opportunities for patients and providers to access technology-driven health care delivery within demo testing conducted by CMS.”
